The general contractor behind The Independent tower has a new vice president, plus a quickly expanding Central Texas real estate firm has snagged a couple brokers and a property management professional from other area firms.

Balfour Beatty US – the general contractor working on the 58-story Independent high-rise and other Austin-area projects – is continuing to boost its Austin focus with the promotion of Ed Prendergast Jr. to vice president and business unit leader of Central Texas.

With 38 years in the construction industry Pendergast previously served as vice president of business acquisition for Texas operations. He has been instrumental in several Balfour Beatty’s projects such as Children’s Medical Center Dallas, Harris Methodist Hospital, One Arts Plaza and the Gaylord Texan hotel.

Pendergast will lead the firm’s effort to meet the “expanding needs of its clients in the high-growth central Texas market,” the company said in a statement.

“Ed Prendergast is a proven leader who is well known for delivering high value for his clients and I’m very pleased that he is leading our continued growth in central Texas,” added Pleas Mitchell, president of Balfour Beatty’s buildings operations in Texas, in a statement.

Josh Welch, Todd Mahler and Stephen Wentworth, NAI Partners

After landing in Austin two years ago, NAI Partners is building its Austin presence with the recent addition of three new real estate professionals and an expansion into the retail space market.

Josh Welch and Todd Mahler both jumped from Austin-based Kucera Companies to NAI Partners. At Kucera, Welch managed a portfolio with $300 million in assets and 1 million square feet of space. Welch will become NAI Partners’ first property management professional. He’ll oversee the Marymont Office Park in San Antonio, a property that NAI Partners Investment Fund purchased earlier this year.

Mahler will join NAI’s office project leasing team. Previously the broker specialized in commercial landlord and seller representation at Kucera and also was a global account executive at Dell Inc.

NAI Partners also snagged another broker, Stephen Wentworth, from San Antonio-based Foresite Commercial. Wentworth will focus on the retail space market — marking an entirely new product line for the Austin NAI office.

“As part of our overall strategic growth plan, we’ve taken our Austin office from a team of one to almost 10 in less than two years,” said Jon Silberman, Managing Partner of NAI Partners, in a statement. “As we continue to grow our team of sales professionals, we remain laser-focused on adding the very best talent Austin has to offer.”
